City Park: The 100 hectare City Park is one of the largest parks in Budapest. The park was built in the 18th and 19th centuries in English style, after the previously swampy area had been drained. In preparation for the Millennium (1000th anniversary of the Hungarian Settlement), the space for what is today Heroes' Square was cut out of the park.
Thermal Bath Széchenyi: This is Europe's largest thermal baths. The impressive, Eclectic-style building, featuring mainly Baroque and Renaissance elements, was built in the early 20th century.
Castle Vajdahunyad: Built on the Széchenyi Island in the City Park with the aim of displaying architectural styles of the past, this is a group of faithfully detailed copies of parts of famous buildings of historic Hungary.
Hero’s Square: The square is a spectacular architectural unit. Its determinant object is the historicist, romantic Millennium Monument which was erected on the 1000th anniversary of the Hungarian settlement. On the elongated axis of Andrássy Avenue (Andrássy út) which meets György Dózsa Street, there stands the marble column of the Millennium Monument which signposts the square from afar. Heroes' Square is bordered by the City Park (Városliget) and is framed by two imposing buildings. Looking from György Dózsa Street, the Museum of Fine Arts, the final example of Hungarian eclectic architecture, is on the left, and, opposite, is the Hall of Arts, a neo-renaissance palace. The determinant element of the square is the Millennium Monument, which consists of the afore-mentioned marble pillar around which there are the Seven Chiefs of the Hungarian Settlement, and then the crescent-shaped colonnade with its sculptures of kings, governors, statement and other suzerains. The square was completed in 1929 when the memorial stone of the unknown soldier, Memorial of the Heroes of the Nation, was placed in the symbolic centre, thus the name Heroes' Square.
Museum of Fine Arts: The uniquely rich material of the museum represents the art of ancient cultures, as well as all periods and styles of European fine art. Its collection of prints and drawings is one of the richest in Europe. There are several permanent exhibitions. The Antiquities Collection displays works of art from ancient times, the Old Masters' Gallery exhibits paintings from Europe's greatest artists between the 12th and the 18th centuries, including works of the Italian Bellini, Giorgione, Raffaello (Madonna Esterházy), Correggio, Leonardo da Vinci, the German Dürer, the Flemish Brueghel the Elder (Sermon of St John the Baptist), Bernart van Orley (Portrait of Charles V), Rubens, Frans Hals, the Spanish El Greco (Penitent Magdolna), Velázquez (Peasants at the Table), Murillo and Goya. Andrássy Avenue: Although divided into three major sections, the avenue, which has been part of the World Heritage since 2002, shows an outstanding architectural homogeneity which can be explained by the fact it was completely built up in little over ten years. The 2.3 kilometer long route of Andrássy Avenue (Andrássy út) was determined in 1872. In 1884 only one plot remained empty, but a year later a palace had been erected here, too. The second stage of the renewal of Pest-Buda, a city with aspirations of being a city of world status, started in Andrássy Avenue.
Hungarian State Opera House: The Opera is one of the most significant 19th century heritage buildings. This neo-Renaissance palace flavoured with Baroque elements was constructed between 1875 and 1884 using all the tricks of its time. The simple, clearly proportioned building can be divided into four distinct areas: the reception hall, the auditorium, the stage, and backstage. Comfort and aesthetics were the main objectives of the designer in the former, practicality in the latter. The rich decoration emphasizes the building's stately purpose. The reception hall and the staircase are of marble, the walls are covered with marble tiles, in the salons the floors are inlayed, and there are silk wall hangings on the walls. The auditorium glows in reddish gold, the ceilings and the sidewalls are decorated with artistic wall paintings and frescos.
St Stephen’s Basilica: The largest church in Budapest and the second most important in Hungary is St Stephen's Basilica. It was built by Jozsef Hild, Miklós Ybl and József Kauser in a neo-Renaissance-Classicist style. The mummified right hand of Hungary's first Christian ruler King Stephen the Saint's (István I) is kept here.
Day 3: BUDAPEST
Breakfast at the reserved hotel in Budapest. Our coach and English speaking guide wait for the group at the reserved hotel in Budapest. In the morning visit of the Hungarian Parliament with local guide. After the visit travel to the Buda side to the Castle District – travel on the Chain Bridge. Walking tour in the Castle District incl. entrance fees to the Matthias Church, Fishermen’s Bastion and the National Gallery. Travel to the Thermal-Bath Gellért – Interior visit (without bathing). Travel to the Gellért Hill to the Citadel, visit to the Panorama of the Pest side. After the sightseeing tour transfer back to the reserved hotel in Budapest. Dinner (3 courses without drink) and overnight at the reserved hotel in Budapest.
Castle District: Part of the World Heritage Site, the Castle, and within it the Royal Palace, stand to the west of the Danube on a hill of marl. The Castle District's town houses with their courtyards, ground floor wings, gateways with sediles, and cellars with dried-up wells all conjure up the atmosphere of the wealthy Buda of the long-gone Middle Ages. It is well worth taking a peek into most of them.
Matthias Church: This Roman Catholic church consecrated to Our Lady is popularly known as Matthias Church; it was used for coronation ceremonies and royal weddings. Originally built in Gothic style, it was reconstructed several times - the neo-Gothic form we see today was created at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries.
Fishermen’s Bastion: The new Fishermen's Bastion was erected between 1895 and 1902 on the foundations of 18th century castle-walls to replace an old stronghold. The neo-Gothic construction dominates the Budapest skyline.
Hungarian National Gallery: The National Gallery as the most complete collection of Hungarian painting and sculpture, holds around 100,000 artefacts. There are outstanding collections: the old Hungarian and the 19th-20th century painting, sculptures, and graphic, and contemporary collections.
Thermal Bath Gellért: Hotel Gellért was built in the late-Secession style in 1918. The Spa, Swimming Pool and Lido complex are integral to the Hotel, making it one of Budapest's most beautiful baths.
